Quick start

  1. Charge first. The EP31 has a rechargeable battery and charges over USB. Charge every radio fully before the first use; the charging indicator is explained in the user manual.
  2. Switch on and choose a channel. Radios from the same EP31 set are on the same channel out of the box. If two radios cannot hear each other, check that both show the same channel (table below) and the same privacy code.
  3. Talk. Press and hold the PTT (push-to-talk) button, wait half a second, then speak; release to listen. The short pause stops the first syllable being cut off.
  4. Hands-free (VOX). The EP31 supports VOX: the radio transmits when it hears your voice. If a radio “keys up” by itself in a noisy place, VOX is switched on – turn it off or lower its sensitivity in the menu (see manual).

Channels & frequencies

The EP31 is a 16-channel PMR446 radio. PMR446 is the harmonised European licence-free band between 446.0 and 446.2 MHz: 16 analogue channels, 12.5 kHz apart, starting at 446.00625 MHz. Every PMR446 radio of every brand uses exactly these frequencies – which is why different brands can talk to each other.

Two radios only hear each other when they are on the same channel and use the same sub-audio setting (a CTCSS or DCS “privacy code”, or no code on both). A CTCSS/DCS code is not encryption: it only keeps your speaker quiet until a matching tone arrives; anyone on the same channel without a code still hears you.

Range: what to expect

Range is set by physics and by law, not by the brand: PMR446 limits every licence-free radio in Europe to 0.5 W ERP with a fixed antenna, so no PMR446 radio has a legal advantage in range. What matters is the terrain and whether the two antennas can “see” each other:

  • Town or city, buildings in between: 300 m – 1.5 km
  • Campsite, park, suburb: about 0.5 – 2 km
  • Open flat ground, beach, field: 1 – 3 km
  • Hilltop to hilltop with nothing in between: 10 km+

The “up to 5 km” on the EP31 box describes open ground with a clear line of sight, not a town.

Water resistance & battery

  • IP54 means dust-protected and protected against splashing water from any direction: rain, spray on a boat, a wet hand. It does not mean waterproof for submersion – do not drop it in the pool or wash it under a tap. Dry the radio and close the charging port cover before charging.
  • Battery. The EP31 uses a rechargeable battery pack. If a radio no longer holds a charge, email service@jucjet.com with your order number; replacement packs are handled by our service team (they are not yet listed in the shop).
  • Charging. Use a standard USB charger (phone charger is fine). A radio that has been empty for months may need a few minutes on the charger before the indicator responds.

Software & manual

Important: only use the European PMR446 software for the EP31 / W31. A North-American “W31 / MP31 GMRS” software and firmware package exists online. It programs GMRS frequencies (462/467 MHz) that are illegal to transmit on in Europe, and a radio flashed with it will no longer talk to PMR446 radios. Do not install or flash it. If you already did, stop using the radio and email us.

FAQ

Do I need a licence to use the EP31?
No. Within the EU and in the UK the EP31 works on PMR446, which is licence-free: switch on and talk.
Can the EP31 talk to walkie talkies from other brands?
Yes. Any PMR446 radio can talk to any other, as long as both are on the same channel and use the same CTCSS/DCS code (or no code on both). If the other radio only shows its frequency, use the table above.
Is the EP31 good for outdoor work and rain?
Yes – that is what the IP54 rating is for: site crews, outdoor events, cycling and camping. It is not made for submersion.
Can I use the EP31 in the USA?
No. The PMR446 frequencies are not open for this use in the USA; you need an FRS radio there (see our H888S FRS). In the UK, yes – PMR446 is licence-free there too.
My four radios cannot “read” or “write” in the software – what now?
Check that you are using the European PMR446 software (see the warning above), the cable driver is installed and the radio is switched on with the volume up. If it still fails, email service@jucjet.com with a screenshot of the error.
What if my EP31 stops working?
Every EP31 comes with a 2-year manufacturer warranty and 30-day returns. Email ka@jucjet.com with your order number and a short description of the problem.
