How Far Do PMR446 Walkie Talkies Really Reach? Honest Range by Terrain

Short answer: two people standing on flat, open ground should expect roughly 1–3 km from any PMR446 radio. In a town with buildings in the way, expect 300 m – 1.5 km. The "5 km" and "10 km" numbers printed on boxes — including on some of our own older packaging — describe a hilltop-to-hilltop scenario with nothing in between. They are not wrong, but they are not what most people will get.

We sell these radios, so it would be easier to just repeat the big number. But the single most common complaint in this category is "the box said 5 km and I got 800 metres." That is not a faulty radio. It is physics, and it is worth explaining properly before you buy.

Why every licence-free radio has the same ceiling

PMR446 is a harmonised European band. Every radio sold as PMR446 — ours, Baofeng's, Motorola's, Midland's — operates under the same legal limits:

  • 446.0–446.2 MHz, licence-free across the EU and the UK
  • 500 mW (0.5 W) ERP maximum. That is half a watt, about the power of a bright LED torch
  • Integral antenna only. The antenna is fixed by law — you may not screw on a longer one
  • Hand-portable only. No base stations, no repeaters, no mast-mounted aerials

Those rules come from ECC Decision (15)05 and the ETSI standards EN 300 296-2, EN 300 113-2 and EN 301 166-2. They exist so that everyone can share 16 channels without a licence. The practical consequence: no PMR446 radio can outperform another by very much. Two radios at the legal limit have the same power and a similar fixed antenna. What separates a good one from a bad one is receiver quality, audio clarity, battery life and build — not range.

If a listing claims 10 km in ordinary use from a licence-free radio, the claim is about ideal conditions, not about a better radio.

What actually decides how far you get

At 446 MHz the signal travels in near-straight lines. It does not follow the curve of the earth and it does not bend around hills. So the question is not "how strong is the radio" but "can the two antennas see each other."

The standard radio line-of-sight formula is:

distance (km) ≈ 3.57 × (√h₁ + √h₂), with antenna heights in metres.

Two people holding radios at chest height (about 1.5 m) gives a theoretical horizon of roughly 8.7 km. In the real world you never reach that, because half a watt has to punch through everything between you: buildings, hills, wet foliage, vehicles — and your own body, which absorbs a surprising amount if the radio is pressed against your chest.

Realistic expectations by terrain

These are typical working ranges for any 0.5 W PMR446 radio. They are estimates for planning, not guarantees — conditions vary enormously.

The record-style results you see in range-test videos are real, but they are all the same setup: two elevated positions with clear air in between. Published amateur tests on half a watt have reached 27 km and, in one widely shared case, about 48 km across water and open terrain. Those are genuine — and they are also completely unrepresentative of a family at a campsite.

Five things that add more range than buying a "stronger" radio

  1. Get higher. This dominates everything else. Walking up a 10 m bank can do more than any hardware change. Stepping onto a bench helps measurably.
  2. Hold the antenna vertical and away from your body. Both radios must be vertical — a tilted antenna alone can cost you a large fraction of your range. Holding the radio out from your chest rather than against it makes a clear difference.
  3. Move, don't shout. If a call fails, take ten steps sideways to get out of a shadow. Repeating louder does nothing.
  4. Change channel. There are only 16 analogue channels, and in busy European campsites and ski resorts they are genuinely congested. A quiet channel sounds like a stronger radio.
  5. Press PTT, pause half a second, then speak. The first syllable is otherwise cut off, which is often mistaken for weak signal.

Can I fit a longer antenna to get more range?

No. PMR446 requires an integral, non-removable antenna. Modifying it makes the radio non-compliant and illegal to use on the band, quite apart from the warranty. If you genuinely need more range, the legal route in Europe is a licensed service — an amateur licence, or a business PMR licence — not a modified PMR446 radio.

Are CTCSS / DCS "privacy codes" encryption?

No, and this is a widespread misunderstanding. A CTCSS or DCS code simply keeps your speaker quiet unless a matching tone arrives. Anyone on the same channel with no code set hears everything you say. It reduces nuisance noise; it does not make your conversation private and it does not add range.

Does more channels mean more range?

No. A 16-channel and a 999-channel radio on PMR446 transmit at the same legal 0.5 W. Extra channels are about avoiding congestion and about memory for other bands, not about distance.

Does a bigger battery give more range?

Only indirectly. Output power stays at 0.5 W. A larger battery holds that output steady for longer, so you do not get the gradual fade many people notice on the second day of a trip. It buys you consistency, not reach.

Will these work in my country?

PMR446 is licence-free across the EU and the UK. A handful of countries outside that area regulate 446 MHz differently, so check locally before travelling with them. Our dual-band models are a different matter — those cover amateur frequencies and require a licence to transmit on.

Which of our radios suits which situation

Since range is fixed by law, choose on everything else:

  • Family, campsite, day trips — the 88E set. Simple, 16 channels, nothing to configure. Expect 1–2 km at a campsite.
  • Wet and rough conditions — the EP31. Same range as everything else; the difference is that it survives rain and drops.
  • You want to learn the hobby — the 5R, UV-5RE and 5RH are dual-band radios covering far more than PMR446. They can do more, but transmitting outside licence-free frequencies requires a licence in Europe. Buy these because you want to learn radio, not because you want more range out of the box.
