JUCJET 5R Support: Manual, Software, Licence & Range

Amateur radio – licence required. The JUCJET 5R is a programmable dual-band (VHF/UHF) amateur (ham) radio, not a licence-free PMR446 or FRS walkie talkie. Transmitting on it requires an amateur radio licence – and, where the national rules say so, a callsign – under the regulations of the country you are in; listening does not. Quick start

  1. Fit the antenna and the battery. Antenna and battery pack are separate items in the box. Screw the antenna on hand-tight before you switch the radio on, and never transmit without an antenna fitted.
  2. Charge first. Place the radio in the USB charging dock and charge fully before the first use. The charging indicator is explained in the printed manual.
  3. Choose frequency mode or channel mode. In VFO (frequency) mode you enter a frequency directly on the keypad; in memory mode you step through the stored channels – the 5R has 128 of them. Only enter and transmit on frequencies your licence permits.
  4. Set the power. Transmit power is selectable between high and low. Use low power whenever the other radios are close; it is kinder to the battery and to other users of the band.
  5. Talk. Press and hold the PTT (push-to-talk) button, wait half a second, then speak; release to listen. Hold the radio upright with the antenna away from your face.
  6. Everything else – menu items, CTCSS/DCS codes, scanning, keypad programming – is in the printed manual in the box. If you no longer have it, email ka@jucjet.com with “5R manual” in the subject line.

Licence & legal use

  • The 5R transmits on the VHF and UHF amateur bands. Transmitting requires an amateur radio licence (and, where applicable, a callsign) under the rules of the country you are in; listening does not. Operation and transmission must comply with the laws and regulations that apply in your region.
  • Programming PMR446 frequencies into the 5R does not make it a PMR446 radio. PMR446 requires a fixed antenna and a 0.5 W ERP limit; the 5R has a removable antenna and selectable power, so it may only be used on amateur bands with a licence.

Frequencies & channels

The 5R has no fixed channel table: its 128 memories are user-programmable, and VFO mode accepts any frequency within the radio’s VHF and UHF ranges. The exact frequency ranges of your unit are printed in the manual in the box and on the model label; we do not publish them here because they have not been verified on this page from a manual or a readout of the radio. Before matching radios, compare the actual frequency and the transmit/receive CTCSS/DCS settings – a channel number alone proves nothing on a programmable radio.

Software & manual

  • UV-5R / UV-5RE programming software (Windows): Download ZIP. This is the package our Download Centre lists as “UV-5R / UV-5RE – also known as 5R, 5RE”. It contains the CPS configuration software only, not firmware or a firmware updater. Connect through the 2-pin USB programming cable.
  • Do not use the “5RM / 5REM (M Edition)” or UV-5RX package on a standard 5R. The Download Centre marks that file as “not the standard 5R / 5RE”.
  • Read before you write. Connect the cable, switch the radio on with the volume up, click Read and save the file that comes back before you change anything. Only then edit and Write. If the read fails, stop – do not write, reset or flash anything – and send ka@jucjet.com the exact error message with a photo of the cable plug.
  • Cable driver. This particular package does not contain a separate cable driver. If Windows does not show the cable under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager, email ka@jucjet.com with a screenshot and we will point you to the right driver.
  • Programming Operation Guide (PDF): Download PDF – our general read-then-write walkthrough. It was written for the 16-channel PMR446 software, so the screens differ from the 5R CPS, but the sequence (connect, switch on, Read, edit, Write) is the same.
  • Third-party software: the open-source CHIRP programmer lists the UV-5R family and points UV-5RE entries to the UV-5R profile. Check its current model list yourself; we cannot support third-party software.

Antenna & battery

  • Antenna. The 5R ships with one antenna, which screws onto the antenna connector. Hand-tighten only, keep it vertical while talking and never transmit without it – transmitting into no antenna can damage the radio.
  • Battery. The 5R uses a rechargeable battery pack and charges in the supplied USB charging dock. If a pack no longer holds a charge, email ka@jucjet.com with your order number; replacement packs are handled by our service team.

Range: what to expect

There is no verified, model-specific field-test distance to quote on this page. Band, antenna, terrain, buildings, radio placement and interference affect intelligibility far more than the brand name does. Before relying on the radios, check two-way speech between the actual positions you need to cover, and record the frequency, power setting and conditions with the result.

FAQ

Do I need a licence to use the 5R?
To transmit, yes: an amateur radio licence under the rules of the country you are in, and a callsign where the national rules require one. Listening does not need a licence.
Can the 5R talk to PMR446 walkie talkies?
Not legally – see “Licence & legal use”. If you need to talk to PMR446 radios, buy a PMR446 radio.
What is the difference between the 5R and the 5RH?
The 5RH is the upgrade: 999 memory channels instead of 128, a 1.77-inch colour TFT display instead of the standard LCD, one-key frequency copy and an extra high-gain antenna in the box. Both have manual tuning. See the 5RH product page and the 5RH support page.
Which software package is right, and what if the radio “did not respond”?
Use the UV-5R / UV-5RE package above, not the M Edition file. If the software cannot read the radio: 1) check that the cable shows up under Ports (COM & LPT) and select that COM port in the software; 2) switch the radio on and turn the volume up; 3) push the plug fully into the 2-pin socket; 4) try another USB port. Still stuck? Email ka@jucjet.com with a screenshot – do not write or flash anything in the meantime.
Can I use the 5R in the USA or the UK?
On amateur bands and with the amateur licence of that country, yes. Never on FRS/GMRS or PMR446 channels.
Which earpiece or headset fits the 5R?
An earpiece is already in the box. The manufacturer-confirmed lists on our earpiece, headset and speaker-microphone pages currently name the 88E, EP31 (W31), T20 Mini, T17, V12D and H888S, not the 5R. Before ordering a spare, email ka@jucjet.com a photo of the radio’s accessory socket and we will confirm what fits.
The manual or label shows a frequency band that differs from the product description. What should I do?
Pause transmitting while the version is checked. Send support a photo of the model label and of the manual’s frequency/specification page, with your order number. Do not change firmware or write a channel file to try to make the radio match the description.
What if my 5R stops working?
